How High Should a Comfortable Wedge Be?

The Sunday Jewel Wedge on a low wedge

"Wedge" covers everything from a barely-there sole to a towering platform. If comfort is the goal, height matters more than anything else.

Our sweet spot: 3–5 cm (about 1.2–2 in)

Our dressy wedges sit in this range. It's enough to look dressed up and to take a little of the stretch off the back of the foot, without tipping your weight forward onto the ball of your foot.

Why not flat?

Completely flat shoes and thin sandals give your arch nothing to rest on and your heel very little cushioning. Many people with sore heels find them the least comfortable option.

Why not higher?

Above 6–7 cm, more and more of your weight shifts onto the front of the foot, and the shoe becomes less stable, especially on grass or cobblestones.

How to measure a wedge

Stand the shoe on a flat surface. Measure straight up at the back, from the ground to where your heel sits, then do the same at the front under the ball of the foot. The difference between the two is the real lift.
